J&K Metro Update: Detailed Plans for Jammu and Srinagar Under Central Review

SRINAGAR – The Jammu and Kashmir government confirmed on March 31, 2026, that comprehensive proposals for metro projects in the twin capitals are currently undergoing appraisal by the Central Government.
Project Highlights & Ridership
Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, representing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, shared key details from the RITES Ltd. reports:
- Jammu Corridor: A 23-km route from Bantalab to Bari Brahmana featuring 22 stations. It projects a daily ridership of 2.84 lakh by 2035 with a strong Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 18.92%.
- Srinagar Corridor: Full topographical and engineering feasibility studies have been completed and submitted for final clearance.
- Expansion: There are currently no active plans to extend the Jammu line to Akhnoor; any future growth remains subject to federal approval.
Technical Readiness
The submitted Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) cover critical factors including seismic design considerations, environmental impact, and land requirements (roughly 31 hectares for the Jammu phase). The move marks a significant step toward modernizing urban transit in the Union Territory's most populous hubs.
